Mardi Gras 1878 — When Fat Tuesday Was Already Making Headlines
Long before cameras filled newspapers, Mardi Gras was already making headlines. This image is a color lithograph published in the March 16, 1878 issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, one of the most widely read illustrated papers in 19th-century America. Before photography could be mass-reproduced, artists were sent directly into the crowds to sketch events by hand. Those drawings were then sent to New York, where engravers transformed them into detailed wood engravings and lithographs, with color added through a labor-intensive process. This was visual journalism — allowing readers across the country to “see” Mardi Gras unfold on Canal Street in New Orleans.
Notice the flags waving above the crowd — purple, green, and gold. These Carnival colors were officially selected in 1872 and are commonly explained as symbolizing justice, faith, and power. Even just a few years later, they were already defining the look and identity of Mardi Gras. Horse-drawn floats, masked riders, packed balconies, and theatrical themes inspired by royalty and mythology show that the spectacle was already grand, artistic, and nationally recognized.
While most people associate Mardi Gras with New Orleans, the first documented Mardi Gras celebration in America actually took place in Mobile, Alabama in 1703 — fifteen years before New Orleans was founded. More than three centuries later, the culture, the color, the music, and the community still endure — and this 1878 image reminds us that the celebration has been captivating crowds for generations.

What we are listening to...
🎶 cleopatrick — SCRAP
cleopatrick is a band built on a lifelong friendship, and SCRAP (released December 5) is their most personal album yet — a record stitched together from songs, memories, and moments spanning nearly ten years.
Their story feels rare in the best way. Luke Gruntz and Ian Fraser have known each other since they were four years old, started making music together at eight, and never stopped. That kind of history shows up everywhere in cleopatrick’s sound — not just in how tight it is, but in how deeply honest it feels.
Luke Gruntz on vocals, guitar, and production, and Ian Fraser on drums and production — built cleopatrick with pure DIY spirit. Two small-town friends from Cobourg, Ontario, figuring things out on their own terms. Playing wherever they could. Building something loud, emotional, and real from the ground up. Their breakthrough came with “hometown,” the song that launched them into wider awareness and firmly put them on the map.
On December 5, cleopatrick released SCRAP — and it’s exactly what the name suggests. The album plays like a scrapbook of songs that never quite found a home before, stitched together with short audio memory postcards placed between full tracks. It spans sounds, eras, and emotional chapters, giving the listener something intimate and lived-in rather than overly polished.
From start to finish, SCRAP is one of our favorite albums of the year.
It feels like a time capsule — bridging eras with a modern-day grunge-meets-basement energy running through the entire album.
💥 Our Favorites:
📱 “BURNER PHONE”
The beat pulls you in immediately, and Luke’s voice demands your attention. This is a lock-in-and-listen song — the kind that makes everything else fade out.
🧱 “GUTS”
Gritty, grunge-garage energy, but elevated. Raw without feeling unfinished. It hits hard and stays with you.
☀️ “NOW ZERO”
A perfect good-day song. Sunny out. Walking your dog. Cruising around. Watching the world move by and feeling good inside it.
🖤 “TALK DOWN”
The depth and emotion here are undeniable. This one hits straight in the chest — vulnerable, heavy, and real.
🎬 “SEVENTEEN”
Luke’s vocal range shines. Listen all the way through. This track feels cinematic — especially during its most intense moments — like it was made for a dramatic film scene.
🌫️ “STILL”
This may be our favorite.
We wake up craving this song. There’s something addictive about it — his voice, the mood, the way it lingers long after it ends. It settles into you quietly and doesn’t let go.
We’ve attached the music video for “Still”.
🧩 The Memory Pieces That Make It Whole
Interwoven throughout SCRAP are short audio memory fragments — no sleep cash only, ur way or mine, morale check, not this time, and much love. These moments are what truly make SCRAP feel like a scrapbook. They’re imperfect, personal, and deeply human.
The “not this time” moment — with the line “I’ve had enough and I’m not gonna take it this time” — makes us laugh every single time. It’s raw, relatable, and perfectly placed.
❤️ Why This Album Matters
SCRAP isn’t just a collection of songs.
It’s a reflection. A look back. A reminder that some things are worth saving — even if they didn’t fit before.
Please go listen to this entire album, all the way through.
It truly rewards your time from beginning to end.
