A Sky Full of Color in 2025

The 2025 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta filled New Mexico’s skies from October 4 – 12, turning Albuquerque into a kaleidoscope in motion for nine unforgettable days. More than 500 hot-air balloons floated above the desert, including around 100 special-shape balloons that drew cheers from every direction. Eleven of those were brand-new designs this year, joining beloved favorites like Darth Vader, the Bee family, and Tico the Sloth.

A standout highlight was the debut of the Route 66 Centennial Balloon, celebrating 100 years of the Mother Road—a nod to the spirit of travel and adventure that defines both Route 66 and the Fiesta itself. Even when weather caused a few delays, the magic never faded. The event wrapped up with a Drone Light Show at sunrise on the final day, followed by the traditional Dawn Patrol, Krispy Kreme Morning Glow, and the breathtaking Farewell Mass Ascension.

From a Radio Stunt to a Global Spectacle

It’s wild to think the world’s largest balloon festival started as a simple idea. Back in 1972, 770 KOB Radio was celebrating its 50th birthday. Station manager Dick McKee teamed up with balloonist Sid Cutter to host a small event in a mall parking lot. Weather trimmed the plan to 13 balloons, which launched on April 8, 1972, from the Coronado Center.

That little launch lit a spark. By 1973, Albuquerque hosted the First World Hot Air Balloon Championship, and the rest is history. Since 1996, the Fiesta has soared from the dedicated Balloon Fiesta Park in north Albuquerque—a 365-acre venue designed specifically for this event.

The People Behind the Magic

More than 3,000 volunteers make this floating masterpiece possible every year, from traffic guides to the famous “Zebras”—the black-and-white-striped launch directors who keep every takeoff synchronized and safe. The event is organized by Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Inc.

Must-See Moments for First-Timers

🌅 Mass Ascension

The heart of the Fiesta. Hundreds of balloons lift off in carefully timed waves at sunrise, filling the sky for two straight hours of pure joy.

🌄 Dawn Patrol

Before the sun peeks over the Sandia Mountains, a handful of certified pilots light up the dark sky with glowing balloons to test wind conditions and set the mood for the morning.

Evenings belong to the glow. Tethered balloons flicker like lanterns in rhythm with music and fireworks. The Glowdeo  showcases those whimsical special-shape balloons—everything from animals to pop-culture icons.

✨ Drone Light Shows & Extras

In recent years, synchronized drone shows have added a futuristic sparkle to the already surreal landscape.

The Albuquerque Box: Nature’s Magic Trick

Albuquerque’s secret weapon is the Albuquerque Box—a rare wind pattern where low-level winds blow one direction and higher-altitude winds blow the opposite way. Pilots can literally “steer” back toward the launch field just by changing altitude. This natural phenomenon makes Albuquerque one of the best ballooning spots on the planet.

Size, Scale & Sky-High Numbers

Today’s Fiesta averages just over 500 balloons, including about 100 special-shapes, and 500–600 pilots representing more than 40 U.S. states and a dozen countries. In its heyday around 1999–2000, balloon counts even topped 1,000 before organizers set limits for safety.

Crowds? A staggering 800,000 to 900,000 visitors come each year—locals, U.S. travelers, and fans from around the globe. The event’s economic impact on Albuquerque tops $170 million annually, proving this celebration truly lifts everyone up.

Records, Legends & “Whoa” Moments

  • November 5, 2011: Set a world record with 345 balloons launching within one hour.

  • October 12, 2019: Marked another world record for the largest mass hot-air balloon ascent, with 524 balloons rising in unison.

  • 1989: Introduced the Special Shape Rodeo, now one of the most photographed events in the world.

  • 2025: Introduced the Route 66 Centennial Balloon and a new lineup of creative shapes that added fresh character to the skies.

Why It Keeps People Coming Back

Maybe it’s the thrill of watching hundreds of balloons lift off against a sunrise. Maybe it’s the smell of roasted green chiles and the sound of live music drifting through the park. Or maybe it’s the feeling of being part of something that started small and soared—just like the balloons themselves.

Whatever it is, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is more than an event—it’s an experience of color, community, and pure wonder.
