Breckenridge, Colorado’s own open-air winter art gallery has been happening every year since the early 1990s. It’s called the Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships — or ISSC for short.
This is a free outdoor art event where international teams hand-carve massive, man-made snow blocks into incredibly detailed sculptures — with NO power tools. Just hand tools, creativity, endurance, and a whole lot of cold-weather focus.
Each team transforms a 12-foot-tall, 25-ton block of snow into a finished work of art over nearly five nonstop days. Volunteers nicknamed “snow stompers” pack down the snow in large molds for these giant blocks by climbing on top and literally stomping it into place, forming solid foundations ready for carving.
This year, sculpting takes place January 24–28, with public viewing from January 28 through February 3. Spectators can watch the entire process for free during “sculpting week,” which is part of what makes this event so special.
After judging, the sculptures are typically lit up at night, creating their own kind of winter magic. It’s like watching a movie set get built in real time — then beautifully highlighted for everyone to enjoy. The only difference? This set will eventually melt away.
Some teams even bring custom-built tools, showing that this isn’t just art — it’s also engineering, problem-solving, and craft.
This year’s teams come from Argentina, Germany, Finland, India, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, Ukraine, Breckenridge, and Vermont. Many staying with host families in the town during this event. Awards include Gold, Silver, Bronze, and a People’s Choice winner — which often differs from the judges’ pick, since it’s chosen by the crowd.
A beautiful tradition that’s grown into one of America’s most iconic winter art events. This is our kind of winter vibe — creative, community-driven, and a little magical, where art brings the world together in a small mountain town, even if only for a moment.
